It's not quite a seasonal thought as yet, but I find it pleasing that the day when one might be thinking of turning to the cold cuts of wren, after the great hunt and feasting that takes place on St Stephen's Day, is also the day that the Church dedicates to a Feast of Children - that is, of the Massacre of the Innocents, on 28th December.
The liturgical calendar has hidden depths, to be sure.
- Won't Someone think of the Chilled Wren?
Says Milder to Molder
Who'll get the spare rib?
Says Festle to Fose
We'll give it all to the poor
Say John the Red Nose
We'll give it all to the poor
Says John the Red Nose.
