I mentioned my grandfather's sailor's palm a while ago, but at that time I wasn't sure whether my mother still had it. Turns out she has - and the bodkin too! I'm very glad they've not been lost.

Sailor's palm and bodkin

Trying it on, I discover that my grandfather had smaller hands than I do. I never thought of him as dainty.

The leather may have shrunk somewhat over time, of course.

Good point.

What a lovely thing.

It is rather beautiful, in the way purely functional objects often are.

And the bodkin too. When I left my mom's house last summer i left behind a palm and a bodkin. I took her fid and her fleam.

Turns out she has - and the bodkin too!

That's very cool.
