Cold Warriors

Gerard Weeden Butler's geological journey by penny-farthing from Krakow to Coblentz probably still counts as the most quintessentially Butler-ish holiday I'm aware of, but now I have one to run it close. I learn this evening that my father's eldest sister chose to take her summer holidays during the 1950s being infected with pathogens at the Common Cold Research Unit just outside Salisbury. The combination of austere altruism and faint ludicrousness is hard to resist.

I have nothing more to say on the subject, but if you wish to sample the glamour of life in one of the CCRU's isolation chalets, Pathé News has a soundless glimpse here.
