Quondam Et Futurus

Another Arthurian query, I'm afraid. I'm now wondering where and when the legend of Arthur's return started. Circa 1125 William of Malmesbury writes that "The sepulchre of Arthur is no where to be seen, whence ancient ballads fable that he is still to come" - but are there any earlier extant references to the idea? (And what wouldn't you give to see those "ballads"?)
