Romancing the Stones

I caught BBC3's Blood, Sweat and Luxuries by accident, more or less. In format, it's an off-the-peg reality TV show, but one with rather more point than most. Six young consumer-happy Brits are sent to work in third-world conditions, producing the jewellery, shoes, clothes, mobiles, etc., that they take for granted on the high street, and discovering that it's not actually that much fun. (There's also an interactive trailer here.)

It came at an opportune moment for me, as I'd just been wondering whether Sara Crewe would have had quite such an Arabian Nights view of life in her Indian diamond mines if she'd had to work there, instead of getting that cushy billet in Miss Minchin's attic.
